Design and Build

Both smartphones occupy the ultra-premium flagship category and use high-end materials and construction. The Galaxy S26 Ultra follows Samsung’s large-screen Ultra design philosophy, providing a substantial display and a built-in S Pen.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max continues Apple’s large Pro Max design and integrates Apple’s familiar Dynamic Island, Action Button and Camera Control features. The biggest difference isn’t simply appearance. It is what each phone allows you to do.

Samsung has built the S26 Ultra around productivity and customization, while Apple places considerable emphasis on simplicity and integration across the Apple ecosystem.

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra’s S Pen

One of Samsung’s biggest advantages for productivity is the integrated S Pen.The stylus allows users to write notes, annotate content, interact with supported applications and perform various precision tasks directly on the display.Because the S Pen is stored inside the smartphone, you don’t have to carry a separate stylus. This makes the Galaxy S26 Ultra particularly interesting for people who frequently take handwritten notes, edit documents, annotate images or want more precise control over their phone. The iPhone 17 Pro Max does not have an equivalent built-in stylus system.

Samsung’s Privacy Display

Samsung has introduced one of the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s most distinctive features: Privacy Display. The technology is designed to make information on the screen more difficult for people beside you to see.Samsung says users can configure privacy protection for the entire display or for selected information, including applications, notifications and sensitive information such as PINs and passwords. This could be particularly useful when using your phone in public places such as buses, airports, offices or restaurants. However, privacy-display technology does not mean the screen becomes completely invisible from every angle. Samsung also provides limitations and viewing-angle considerations for the feature.

Camera Comparison

Camera performance is one of the most important areas separating modern flagship smartphones.Galaxy S26 Ultra Camera SystemSamsung equips the Galaxy S26 Ultra with a versatile multi-camera system consisting of:200MP main camera50MP ultra-wide camera50MP telephoto camera10MP telephoto camera12MP front-facing cameraSamsung also supports optical zoom options and up to 100× digital zoom. The high-resolution main sensor gives Samsung considerable flexibility when capturing detailed photographs and cropping into images. Its combination of multiple focal lengths also makes the phone suitable for everything from everyday photography to distant subjects

iPhone 17 Pro Max Camera System

Apple takes a different approach with the iPhone 17 Pro Max.The phone features:48MP main camera, 48MP ultra-wide camera48MP, telephoto camera18MP front camera. The system supports spatial photography and advanced computational photography features.Apple also offers up to 8× optical-quality telephoto and 40× digital zoom.Rather than competing purely through megapixel numbers, Apple places significant emphasis on computational photography, image processing and the interaction between its cameras, processor and software.Which Camera Approach Is Different? The numbers tell only part of the story.Samsung emphasises resolution and zoom versatility, while Apple emphasizes computational photography and tight hardware-software integration. For example, someone who frequently photographs distant subjects may be particularly interested in Samsung’s extensive zoom system.Someone who places greater emphasis on Apple’s photography workflow, spatial photography and integration with the wider Apple ecosystem may approach the iPhone differently.Actual image quality can also depend on lighting conditions, software processing, camera settings and the photographer’s preferences.

Video Recording

Video is another area where both companies have invested heavily. The Galaxy S26 Ultra supports 8K video recording at up to 30fps and includes advanced video features designed for creators.Samsung also provides features such as LOG video and specialized stabilization options. The iPhone 17 Pro Max also focuses strongly on professional video recording and provides advanced recording features aimed at creators and filmmakers. Both phones therefore target users who want more than basic point-and-shoot video. The supplied reviewer also highlighted differences in stabilization, exposure, detail and overall video output during testing. These observations should be treated as test-specific rather than universal results.

Display

The Galaxy S26 Ultra features a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a resolution of 3120 × 1440 and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz.Samsung also provides its Privacy Display technology and a high-brightness mode for outdoor viewing. The iPhone 17 Pro Max also has a 6.9-inch display.Apple’s Super Retina XDR display has a resolution of 2868 × 1320, supports ProMotion with refresh rates up to 120Hz, and can reach up to 3,000 nits of outdoor peak brightness. Both displays are therefore designed for demanding users, although the technologies and specifications differ.

Performance and Speed

Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra and Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max both use flagship-level processors. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is powered by Samsung’s latest high-end mobile platform, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max uses Apple’s A19 Pro chip.Performance isn’t simply about benchmark scores. For everyday users, important considerations include:App loadingGamingMultitaskingVideo editingAI processingCamera processingBattery efficiencyLong-term software supportThe supplied reviewer reported strong performance from both phones, with differences depending on the type of task being performed.

Multitasking and Productivity

This is another area where Samsung takes a very different approach. The Galaxy S26 Ultra supports advanced multitasking, including split-screen applications and other productivity functions.Users can run multiple applications simultaneously, making the large display more useful for work.Samsung DeX also allows compatible Galaxy devices to provide a desktop-style experience when connected to an appropriate display and accessories. The iPhone 17 Pro Max provides Apple’s own multitasking and productivity features, but it does not offer an identical DeX-style desktop environment. For people who use their smartphone as a productivity device, this distinction is significant.

Customization

Samsung has traditionally offered extensive customization options through One UI.The Galaxy S26 Ultra continues this approach, including tools such as Good Lock, which can provide additional customization options for supported Galaxy devices.Users can modify aspects of the interface, lock screen, navigation and other parts of the experience.Apple has expanded customization in recent versions of iOS, but its approach remains more controlled than Samsung’s.This creates two distinct philosophies:Samsung: more flexibility and customization.Apple: a more controlled and consistent interface.Neither approach is universally preferable; it depends on how much control the user wants over the phone.

AI Features

Artificial intelligence has become a major part of flagship smartphones.Samsung integrates Galaxy AI into several parts of the Galaxy S26 Ultra experience. The phone also works with services including Google’s Gemini and Samsung’s own AI-related tools.Features can assist with tasks such as information processing, productivity and automated actions. The iPhone 17 Pro Max uses Apple Intelligence and Apple’s integration with supported AI services.Apple has also introduced features such as Genmoji and enhanced Siri-related capabilities. The two companies therefore take different approaches to smartphone AI, with Samsung emphasizing a broad collection of AI-powered functions while Apple integrates AI deeply into its operating system and ecosystem.

Software and Ecosystem

The software experience is arguably one of the biggest reasons people choose between Samsung and Apple. The Galaxy S26 Ultra runs Samsung’s Android-based One UI experience. This provides access to Android applications, extensive customization and integration with Samsung’s ecosystem.Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max runs iOS and is designed to work closely with other Apple products such as Macs, iPads, Apple Watches and AirPods. If you already own several devices from one ecosystem, that ecosystem can significantly influence the overall experience.

Battery Life and Charging

The Galaxy S26 Ultra features a 5,000mAh battery and supports 60W wired charging.Samsung has also optimized the device for power efficiency and extended usage.Apple does not typically publish the iPhone’s battery capacity in its standard consumer specifications in the same way Samsung does.Instead, Apple focuses on battery-life measurements based on specific usage scenarios.Battery performance can vary significantly depending on:Screen brightnessMobile network conditionsGamingCamera usageVideo streamingBackground applicationsRefresh rateAI processingTherefore, advertised battery figures should not automatically be interpreted as identical real-world endurance.

Security and Privacy

Samsung provides several security-focused features within its Galaxy ecosystem. The Galaxy S26 Ultra includes Secure Folder, while the new Privacy Display provides an additional layer of visual privacy when using the phone around other people.Apple also places considerable emphasis on privacy and security throughout iOS.Both companies therefore treat security as an important part of their flagship experience, although they implement it through different technologies and software systems.

Software Updates

Long-term software support is increasingly important when purchasing an expensive smartphone.Samsung states that the Galaxy S26 Ultra is eligible for security updates through February 28, 2033.That gives buyers a long period of continued security support.Apple has historically maintained long-term software support for its iPhones as well, although Apple’s approach to communicating update support differs from Samsung’s published security-update commitment.

Price

The supplied review discussed US launch pricing of approximately $1,299 for the Galaxy S26 Ultra and $1,199 for the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Which Phone Is Right for You?

Rather than simply declaring one phone the winner, consider what you actually need from your smartphone. The Galaxy S26 Ultra may appeal to you if you want:An integrated S PenExtensive customizationPowerful multitaskingSamsung DeXVery high-resolution photographyExtensive zoom capabilityPrivacy DisplayAndroid flexibilitySamsung’s Galaxy AI ecosystemThe iPhone 17 Pro Max may appeal to you if you want:Apple’s iOS ecosystemStrong integration with other Apple devicesA powerful A19 Pro processorAdvanced photography and video featuresSpatial photographyApple’s approach to AIApple’s software and hardware integration

Final Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and iPhone 17 Pro Max are both high-end flagship smartphones, but they prioritize different experiences.Samsung’s approach centers on flexibility, productivity, customization, zoom photography, the S Pen, Privacy Display and a wide range of built-in features.Apple’s approach focuses heavily on processor performance, camera and video integration, iOS, Apple Intelligence and the wider Apple ecosystem. The more useful question is therefore not simply “Which phone is better?” but “Which phone’s features match the way I use my smartphone?”For someone who wants a highly customizable Android device with an integrated stylus and extensive productivity tools, the Galaxy S26 Ultra offers a distinctive feature set.For someone already invested in Apple’s ecosystem or who prioritizes Apple’s particular approach to photography, video, software and device integration, the iPhone 17 Pro Max provides a different set of strengths.Ultimately, both phones represent different interpretations of what a premium smartphone should be.
